“Pull repeat striking mechanisms in English table clocks”
op donderdag 9 februari 2023 om 19:30 uur door Sunny Dzik
Over de lezing
This presentation will focus on mechanisms of pull repeat striking in English clocks made during the period 1675-1725. This inventive period of English horology emphasized pull quarter repeat striking. English makers used a great variety of different mechanisms to achieve pull repeat work. That variety will be reflected in 3 examples that Sunny will describe: one from a timepiece, one from an 8-day clock, and one from a work by Tompion.
The presentation is keyed to the publication of Beneath the Dial, a new book on the topic of English pull repeat work. The book, to be printed in February 2023, is a 600 page text with >700
illustrations and is in two parts: Part 1 of the text reviews the origins of pull strike-work during the last quarter of the 17th century touching on contributions by Reverend Barlow, Joseph Knibb, Thomas Tompion, Daniel Quare and others who introduced new advances in striking designs that extended throughout the 18th century. Part 2 of the text presents a detailed Atlas which categorizes pull quarter strike designs for over 200 clocks and timepieces produced between 1675 and 1725. www.englishtableclocks.org
Over de spreker
Walter “Sunny” Dzik is for the second time with us (ref. his lecture “Engraving on English Table Clock” which he gave January last year). Sunny has been a student and collector of English table clocks for over two decades.
Sunny graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Romance Languages and Literature and received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He trained in Internal Medicine and Hematology at Boston University Medical Center and did fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. He is currently an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and as the Editor of Transfusion Medicine Reviews.
